Asst. Prof. Dr. Jassim Mohammed abdo took office as Vice-President for Scientific and Postgraduate Affairs at University of Zakho on November 2023.
Jassim M. Abdo earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology & Immunology from Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany. With 20 years of experience, he has specialized in Molecular microbiological research, Bioinformatics, Epigenetics, and Food Biosecurity & Biosafety. Additionally, he serves as an instructor at UOD and UOZ, teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
From NOV 2023 to now, I served as the Vice President of the University of Zakho for Scientific Affairs. I was also Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Duhok University and a reviewer for various journals. Additionally, I directed the UOD covid19 Center for Research and Diagnosis, led the Department of Basic Science at the College of Pharmacy, and served as Director of the Duhok Research Center from 2011 to 2018. I supervised 17 theses, including nine PhD and eight MSc students.
He has been invited as a head of sessions, speaker, or organizer for numerous international and local scientific conferences and workshops. He has participated in over 39 international conference workshops, organized more than seven national workshops, served on over 45 postgraduates (PhD and MSc) Examination committees in Iraq and Kurdistan Region, and published over 59 articles in national and international journals with high impact factor and hi-index 9. Additionally, he has submitted more than 900 genome sequences to the NCBI and GISAID.
He was elected as a representative of the Ministry of Higher Education in the Kurdistan Region Governorate to participate in an international workshop and conference. One was organized by the UNESCO project for developing higher education and research in Iraq, and the other was organized by Gryphon Scientific, LLC-DTRA-USA. He received several appreciation letters from the university president regarding his Teacher Portfolio by the Higher Committee of Quality Assurance and Accreditation, issued by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. He was awarded A and A+ certificate degrees five years ago.
He received numerous letters of gratitude for his efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic from various notable figures including the Health Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, the president of Duhok University, the Director General of Health in Duhok, and the Director of New stander for Quality Control. Throughout the pandemic, he played a crucial role in diagnosing the virus by establishing a Molecular diagnostic lab at the Duhok General Health Directorate. He oversaw the team’s diagnostic efforts, evaluated COVID-19 labs in the region and private labs in Duhok, and actively participated in seminars, workshops, international conferences, and press interviews. He was also a guest on over fifteen TV interviews, including k24, Rudaw, waar, Duhok TV, and Zanko Radio. Additionally, he supervised PhD and MSc students studying the Coronavirus disease.
He determined the epidemiology curve of SARS2 in Duhok, conducted whole genome sequencing submitted to GISAID, identified emerging variants of SARS-CoV2 in Duhok, and successfully established collaborative projects with TSRI–USA (Kurdistan SARS-CoV-2 Project (gp201/Kurdistan Project) for whole genome sequencing of SARS-CoV2 (sequencing over six hundred samples by NGS).
Regarding his work in Food Biosecurity & Biosafety, he led a biology lab at the Ibrahim Khalil International Entry Complex – New Stander Company Complex Border Laboratory in the Kurdistan Regional Governorate. He set up a molecular diagnostic lab and utilized cutting-edge tools following Iraqi standards and international ISO guidelines for testing imported products. He was recognized with multiple letters of gratitude and successfully completed the “ISO 19011:2011 Internal Auditor Training” by Intertek. Additionally, he achieved the PT INSTANT Certificate 2019 from Germany.
